Uche Sparks Dominant Crystal Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever European campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing key players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding win that all but secures them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their next match against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to seal straight entry to the last 16, especially after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Moment
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, scoring for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season were no match even for a largely rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were further depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee dismissed the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still scope for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
