Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such medications need to be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
