No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in public works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
